The European project Harpooners has officially launched with the mission to develop the next generation of high-voltage, modular, and lightweight battery storage systems for maritime and inland waterborne transport. The initiative is coordinated by TECNALIA Research & Innovation and brings together 13 partners from seven European countries, combining expertise from research, industry, logistics, and maritime technology.
A European Project for Efficiency and Sustainability in the Maritime Sector
Funded by Horizon Europe, the European Union’s flagship research and innovation programme, Harpooners aims to revolutionise electric propulsion in the maritime sector. The project will focus on:
- Developing a modular and flexible AC battery system
- Enabling full electrification of small and medium-sized vessels
- Improving energy efficiency in larger vessels
- Supporting safety, certification, and commercial adoption of new technologies
Over the course of three years (2025–2028), Harpooners will integrate advanced powertrain systems with digital twin technologies and real-time monitoring tools, ensuring both performance and compliance with maritime safety standards.
A Collaborative Effort Across Europe
The Harpooners consortium includes partners from Austria, Belgium, Italy, Norway, Spain, Türkiye, and the United Kingdom, representing a wide range of knowledge in battery systems, power electronics, software, and vessel operation.
The kick-off meeting took place in Brussels, where representatives from all partner organisations gathered to align on project goals and implementation. From technical development to communication and exploitation, each work package is designed to support a successful transition to clean, electric-powered maritime transport.
